When the America’s Cup came to San Francisco Bay this past September, I never dreamed that I would be asked to be on a boat photographing these amazing ships on three separate occasions.
When my clients asked me to photograph their family, my first question was, “What do you all like doing together?” Their reply, SAILING! They’d met while racing in the Atlantic one summer while both still in college, fell in love, got married, had children and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area. On her 40th birthday, her husband and lifetime sailing partner surprised her with a sailboat – the perfect gift for the whole family.
So that Sunday we headed out of Alameda towards San Francisco to capture their family portraits, on the water. Husband, wife, and three beautiful children, all dressed in their sailing gear with the skyline of the city in the background, amazing! As the morning progressed and we got closer to that day’s Americas Cup race start time and the Bay Bridge, the couple turned to me and asked if I’d like to join them to see the race, of course I said yes!
What followed was a bit crazy and lots of fun! We positioned ourselves on the south side of Alcatraz near the Bay Bridge and one of the turn buoys. There were so many boats in the water, most of our time was spent trying to stay clear. As the race began and the ships drew near, the husband asked me, “if I turn the boat around with the stern facing the oncoming boats, could you get a shot of the family with the Americas Cup Oracle boat in the background?” “All we can do is try,” I replied, and try we did. Here is one of my favorite San Francisco Bay Area Family Portraits, for 2013!
